About Sacred Groves of Mawphlang

The Sacred Groves of Mawphlang near Shillong are one of the last fragments of primeval subtropical broadleaf forest surviving in the Meghalaya plateau, protected for centuries by the Khasi people under strict customary law that prohibits any removal of even a fallen leaf from the grove. These ancient forests are extraordinary ecological time capsules, harbouring plant species, mosses, ferns, and fungi that have vanished from surrounding landscapes. The Khasi guardian deity of the grove is believed to punish those who harm the forest, and this belief has proven more effective than any government regulation.
