About Seven Sisters Falls (Nohsngithiang)

Nohsngithiang Falls — popularly called Seven Sisters Falls, one of India's most evocative waterfall names — is a remarkable 315-metre cascade that splits into seven distinct channels as it drops over a curved escarpment near Cherrapunji. In peak monsoon, the seven streams merge into a single overwhelming cataract; in drier weather, they separate into distinct threads of white water falling through the lush green moss of the cliff face. The site overlooks the Bangladesh plains 1500 metres below — one of the most vertiginous viewpoints in India.

The falls are named for the seven states of northeast India — Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh — creating a political-geographic poetry that makes this waterfall unusually resonant. The Cherrapunji landscape around the falls is one of the world's rainiest inhabited places, and the combination of extreme rainfall, limestone geology, and living root bridge culture makes this corner of Meghalaya one of the most remarkable landscapes on earth.

July–August when all seven channels are flowing at maximum capacity.

💡 Pro tip

The viewpoint at the top is excellent but the all-seven-channel shot requires the right angle — a longer lens from the road compresses the channels into a single frame.
