About Maenam Forest

Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary sits on the Maenam Ridge in South Sikkim, rising from subtropical broadleaf forest through temperate mixed forest to mossy elfin woodland at the summit. The ridge is sacred as a pilgrimage route to the Maenam cave, where the Buddhist saint Gotsangpa Gonpo Dorje meditated. The sanctuary's dense bamboo groves and rhododendron thickets are prime red panda habitat, and the rare Fire-tailed Myzornis — one of the most exquisite birds in Asia — is regularly seen in the flowering trees.
