About Khangchendzonga Biosphere Forest
Khangchendzonga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site sheltering the world's third-highest mountain at 8586 metres, a peak sacred to the Sikkimese as the 'Five Treasure Houses of Snow' — the guardian deity of the Kingdom of Sikkim. The park encompasses one of the world's most dramatic vertical ranges of biodiversity, from subtropical forest at 1220 metres to permanent ice above 7000 metres, supporting over 550 plant species. Living monasteries within the park boundaries reflect centuries of Buddhist stewardship of this landscape.
