About Silent Valley

Silent Valley National Park is one of the last undisturbed tracts of tropical rainforest in the southern Indian subcontinent, saved in 1984 after a landmark environmental campaign that stopped a hydroelectric dam. The silence of the valley — from the unusual absence of cicadas — gives the park its haunting, evocative name. The lion-tailed macaque symbolised the fight to save Silent Valley.
