About Birthi Falls
Birthi Falls is the hidden gem of the Kumaon Himalaya, a 126-metre plunge that most travellers on the Munsiyari road glimpse briefly from a roadside viewpoint before driving on. Those who stop and descend to the base are rewarded with one of the most dramatic encounters with a Himalayan waterfall — the fall strikes a projecting rock shelf and explodes into a billowing cloud of mist that drenches everything within 50 metres. The surrounding oak and rhododendron forest is pristine and shelters a remarkable diversity of Himalayan birds.
Birthi is a short detour from the spectacular Munsiyari road, which connects the Kumaon valley town to the inner Himalayan ranges near the Tibet border. The broader Munsiyari landscape — with its direct views of the Panchachuli peaks and the traditional Johari Bhotia village culture — is one of Uttarakhand's finest undiscovered destinations. Birthi Falls acts as a natural introduction to this landscape, and the trail below the falls continues into the Birthi forest, which harbours a resident leopard population.
September–November for excellent visibility and good water volume after monsoon.
A telephoto lens from the road captures the full height; descend to the base for intimate spray-zone portraits.
