About the Kabini

The Kabini is the most famous wildlife river in peninsular India — not because of its length (just 200 km) but because of the extraordinary concentrations of elephants, tigers, leopards, gaur, and dholes that gather on its banks as the dry season advances and the forest reservoir shrinks. The Kabini Reservoir, created by a dam near Mysore, has become India's most legendary wildlife photography location, where hundreds of elephants wade across the water in the golden evening light against a backdrop of forest and sky.

The Kabini connects the Nagarahole and Bandipur tiger reserves — two of South India's most important protected areas — and its reservoir forms the boundary between them. Evening safaris from the lodges at Kabini offer some of the most reliable large mammal sightings in India, with elephants in groups of 50–100 crossing the shallow reservoir at dusk being a virtually daily occurrence during April and May. The Kabini's concentration of wildlife during summer drought is one of the most extraordinary ecological spectacles in India.
